Jessica Kivnik
I am a writer, filmmaker and mother of 2 with extensive on- and off-set TV and film production experience including writing and independently producing a multi-camera webseries, writing episodes of Bosch and Devious Maids, and running basecamp on multimillion dollar features like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (while pregnant). Having juggled a creative career and production work and parenting, I am all too familiar with the ways in which the film and tv industries are largely unsupportive and unsustainable to working parents. Since becoming a mom, the film and TV opportunities I take on now have only been possible with the support of (female) Showrunners and leaders who are also parents - allowing me to work flexibly, off-set or off-site if needed.
Seeking more stable work, I pivoted to copywriting, working as brand marketer and creative director for various brands, mostly in the beauty/wellness and fashion/retail industries. I was pleased to find that writing copy for a headline and seeing my work on a brand’s website or in-store display could be as gratifying as hearing my words spoken, or seeing a scene I’d envisioned come alive on TV. However, the desire and need to pivot was not without struggle and a sense of sadness and loss that my life as a creative filmmaker was not sustainable alongside the work of parenting young kids. This is why I am so excited to bring the vision of Cinecamp to life.
I regularly engage in community-building work and believe in the power of the collective. I am a proud member of IATSE Local 871, having served two terms as Chair of the Local’s Triennial Election Commission and a member of the Organizing Committee responsible for gaining union representation for Writers Assistants and Script Coordinators. I was also an active advocate for living wages for all film and tv workers as a voice in the PayUpHollywood movement. I served as President of my local chapter of MOMS Club, a non-profit organization for building a hyperlocal mom community - vital to my early years as a mom and on the Executive Board of the Chicago Improv Festival. I am an energetic creative thinker and problem-solver who believes that film people are magic people who can accomplish anything.
